Cut & Run is a blog devoted to my goal of running a marathon in all 50 states, which I completed on November 16, 2014. As a practicing orthopaedic surgeon, I have to balance the demands of a busy practice with the training necessary to reach my goals. Some days, quite literally, all I do is cut and run. In this blog, I would like to share training, health, and life lessons learned from 25 years of marathons and medicine.

Northwest Double
This is the weekend of my Northwest Double. Tomorrow, I run a marathon around Timothy Lake, in the shadow of Mount Hood. After that, I head six hours north to Port Angeles, WA.
Here are some pictures from the lodge where I'm staying (bring your own bedding!) and from the lake.

A Big "Thank You"
Next weekend I travel to the pacific northwest for a double marathon, running Oregon on Saturday and Washington on Sunday. My final long training run last Saturday of 20 miles was hampered by severe knee pain the last 8-9 miles. My iliotibial band was acting up again. I took a couple of days off and with a couple of treatments by my Physical Therapist, Rob Kobza at Snyder Physical Therapy, I have been able to run pain free the last two days.
Thanks, Rob!

Product Review
I generally run with a water belt and bottle from Ultimate Direction. It is comfortable and lightweight and can carry keys, tissues, etc. However, the amount of fluid and other belongings is limited. On my recent trail marathon in Delaware, I wanted something that I could store a rain jacket in and I also decided to take the shoe/boot covers along that I tried to wear while crossing the creek. My little pack wouldn't be up to the task. The sales associate at Scheels recommended the Osprey Viper hydration pack. It can be filled with up to 3L of water or sports drink and has quite a bit of room to pack a few extras, including a rain jacket, change of running gear, etc. It was very stable, comfortable, and lightweight. Highly recommend.
Lincoln Marathon this Weekend
Good luck to all the participants in the Lincoln Half & Full Marathon this weekend! Once again, I will be providing orthopedic coverage in the medical area at the finish inside Memorial Stadium.
