Nature's Advil

Most of us have probably gotten a massage at some point in our lives.  It is usually viewed as an indulgence or luxury.  There may be some athletic and medical benefit to massage, however.

Researchers studied the effects of massage after physical activity.  They performed muscle biopsies on the subjects, and found lower levels of markers of inflammation, as well as increased mitochondria, the "power plants" of muscle cells.

The results suggest that massage after vigorous physical activity might be able to hasten recovery and improve performance in subsequent activity.
